Is It Safe To Exercise With Pain?
It’s one of the most common questions I hear in the clinic: “Should I keep working out if I’m in pain?”
The short answer? It depends. It depends on the type, severity, and cause of the pain.
Some discomfort during or after exercise is completely normal—like muscle soreness after a tough workout. But sharp, stabbing, or lingering/worsening pain is your body’s way of waving a red flag.
Pain rated 3/10 or less, that doesn’t worsen during activity, and resolves shortly after is often okay to work through—with the right modifications. If pain changes how you move, lingers beyond 48 hours, or increases over time, it’s a sign to get checked out.
Ignoring pain can lead to other parts of your body over compensating, chronic issues, and delayed recovery. On the flip side, completely avoiding movement and/or stopping exercise altogether can make the problem worse. The key is guided, progressive rehab.
